Blank Sheet

I sat down with my pen in hand

To write some words to understand

And I stared at a blank sheet

Can’t seem to make my thoughts meet

I walked around the room and lit a smoke

Went to the fridge and got a coke

And I tried to clear my head

I sat back down on my bed

But no thoughts make sense to me

In the land of the brave and home of the free

To be held captive by society

Maybe a blank sheet is what we need

I saw on a man on the news today

Said what we really need to do is pray

I’ve a Bible beside my bed

Still the picture isn’t clear in my head

On my wall is an American flag

And empty bottles fill my trash bag

The toll that life takes on a soul

The wars, and the crime, and the lies told

No thoughts make sense to me

In the land of the brave, the home of the free

To be held captive by society

Maybe a blank sheet is what we need

I looked back at the words that I wrote

And off to the side I made a note

Did I say what really meant to say?

I wish my thoughts were as clear the day.

But no thoughts make sense to me

In the land of the brave, the home of the free

To be held captive by society

Maybe a blank sheet is what we need
